General Tournament Rules:
• The tournament will have 5 rounds played over 2 days.
• There will be 2.5 hours allocated to each battle.
• No back‐of‐the‐book lists.
• No Special Characters or “Named” Characters are allowed. Special or “Named”
Character models may be used to represent ‘normal’ characters.
• All armies must use an Army book that has been published and released in
Australia by or on the 31 August 2009. If no such Army book exists, you must use the most recent work‐in
progress list, published either in White Dwarf or in a Warhammer
Annual/Chronicles, released. If no work‐in‐progress list is available, then armies must use the appropriate list from the Ravening Hordes booklet (that means you Chaos Dwarf players!)
• Beastmen armies will be restricted to the requirements from the 2008 Q&A thus
can only use the items/options exclusively from the Beastmen book
• Storm of Chaos lists will not be used
• Any items/options from the Albion campaign will not be used
• Dogs of War armies may be used as published in the Chronicles 2004, including all Regiments of Renown published in the Chronicles 2004 and in White Dwarf, and released in Australia by 1 May 2006.
• Non Dogs of War armies may include Dogs of War or Regiments of Renown as Rare choices as indicated in the appropriate DoW unit description. Note that the Ogre Rhinox cavalry are allowed and will use up the stated 2 rare slots in non DoW, non Ogre Kingdom armies.
• Dogs of War units of Pikemen, Heavy Cavalry and Paymaster’s Bodyguard can
carry a magic banner up to a value of 50 pts.
• All models used must be painted miniatures of the appropriate type for the
troops they represent. Minimum painting standards are three colours on each
model in an appropriate scheme. Models should also be appropriately based.
Suffice to say that an under‐coat is not enough! Weapons, armour options and
upgrades chosen from the army list must be shown on the majority of the models in a unit.
• Deathfang, Asarnil’s Dragon, has a 3+ armour save and is worth 330 Victory
points. Asarnil himself is worth 130 points
• Even though they have names Deathfang, Cachtorr and Bologs do not count as characters.
• All games will be played using the pitched battle scenario, there will be no
scenarios

Scoring:
Battle (100 Points)
Five games will be played by each player with a maximum of 20 battle points being gained per game
(massacre). The first round will be random. Opponents for the 2nd & subsequent rounds will be
determined by the rankings of the players (Swiss chess format).
The following VP table will be used to determine the points received by each player per battle.

Sportsmanship (25 Points)
The intent behind the sports criteria is to encourage people to play in an acceptable manner.
This doesn’t mean being fun and lively – it simply means playing by the rules and not cheating, throwing dummy spits or sulking. As such the system will ensure that people who play nicely get about the same points – but people who are poor sports will be hit big time in terms of sports At the conclusion of each round you will be required to complete a simple 1-4 sports sheet according the following criteria.

4pts Everything you expect in a tourney game, I look forward to a rematch
3pts This player was a reasonable sport but could have improved in some area
2pts Some aspect of this game left me wishing I’d drawn a different opponent
1pt Frankly this person was one of the worst opponents I’ve ever faced. I hopeI don’t come across them again for a while!

For most of your opponents you will give a maximum score of 4. However at the end of both
days you will be able to give one of your opponents a bonus point. You do not have to give out
this point but if you do it must be for only one opponent. Please write down the name of the
player you wish to give the bonus point to in the space provided.

Composition (25 points)
Castle Assault 2009 will be a pier judged tier based composition system.

The player will apply a modifier to his opponents list before the game starts. They determin whether it should be moved up or down in the tier scale (or remain the same with a 0 modifier).  Modifiers can be as low as a -2, and as much as a +1.  Modifiers are applied in 0.5 increments.  Your final composition score will be applied to each game round. This system is to discourage list design that will impede on the enjoyment of the game.

NOTE: Abusive lists will be returned to the player with feedback for change..

Army Tiers are as follows –

Tier 1 – 2/5 (Vampires, Daemons, Dark Elves)
Tier 2 – 2.5/5 (Wood Elves, Bretonians)
Tier 3 – 3/5 (Tomb Kings, High Elves, Empire, Lizardmen, Warriors of Chaos, Skaven)
Tier 4 – 3.5/5 (Orcs & Goblins, Chaos Dwarves, Dwarves, Dogs of War)
Tier 5 – 4/5 (Beastmen, Ogres)

Painting (10 points)
The painting score is designed to make players paint their armies to a minimum standard and encourage the better painters amongst us to strive to do their best. You don’t have to be a golden deamon winner to score full points. Most armies if they have had some effort put into them will score well.

1pt All models painted with a minimum of 3 colours
1pt All models based and flocked
1pt Bases have been based with 2 different materials or above average effort has been made
1pt All models inked/highlighted
1pt Army has a consistent feel.
1pt Some models have had minor conversions
1pt The army has a major conversion or a large number of minor conversions.
1pt The characters are unique and umm….full of character!
1pt The army has painted/flocked movement trays
1pt All models represent their troop type (conversions/non GW minis are ok, it just needs to be obvious what they are being used as)

PRIZES
Best Sport: The person with the best sportsmanship score. Tie breaker will be position overall
Best army: Person with the highest combination of painting and composition. Tie breaker will be position overall.
Player’s choice: Before the 1st  game on day 2 begins players will be asked to setup their armies in a pleasing manner and players will be asked to vote for their favourite army. The person who receives the most votes will be awarded the players choice award
1st, 2nd 3rd overall: Self explanatory. Tie breaker will be battle score followed by composition

It was a fantastic day everything and everyone looked great and we had an absolute blast.

Welcome to Update 3 for my Bi-weekly Podhammer Ogre Army Diary. Here you will find a few pics of models, conversion ideas and model inspiration that I intend to implement within my ogres. All those ogre lovers out there will realise that there are a couple of units missing (maneaters, yettees, giant etc), for atm I am focusing on those models that I will definately be fielding. I hope you enjoy them!!

I do have some pretty crazy ideas for this army and am not even shore if it is going work…. But like the guys said, ”I’m a freak!”  So where to start….

Tyrant (Worg): Using the model ‘as is’ w/hippogryph wings.

Butchers (Lonwolf’s and Rune Guarians): Not sure about these guys. Any ideas?

Gnoblars (WE Sprites, Sylvan Animae, Dream Warriors and Daikinee Zeiphiers): Now, these guys are going to be on a scenic movement tray using the GW plastic trees in conjunction with the Back2Basix forest bases to convey and emphasise the forest spirit theme.

Ironguts (Irix the Ultimate): Now this is one wicked model and will stand as the basis of the Irongut model while the smaller Irix the Fury will give me a few extra bits to convert them differently. Also the use and manipulation of metal pegasus wings to emphasise movement in the different poses.

Leadbelchers (Wolfen and Warhawks): I will be removing the crossbows and converting them similar to the ol’ school WE Falconeer. I have had a look at the size comparison to these two different models and the warhawk shouldnt be too big… I hope!

Rhinox (HE Dragon and Wolfen Riders): Wo0o0o0oT!! Wo0o0o0oT!! Give me a sec………… Oh yeah, I think they speak for themselves ;o)

There will always be grey areas in a game as complex as Warhammer, however this issue is one that fundamentally changes the nature of the Vampire Army. Debate has raged over this topic on forums and in gaming groups worldwide. It put particular pressure on Tournament organisers as in the abscence of a clear Games Workshop decision it was up to these guys to make the call and hope for the best.

I decided to do something about it. A few months ago a listener put me in contact with Jervis Johnson and Rick Priestly from the GW headquaters. Jervis was a fan of the show and I was interested in getting them on as guests. Legal and marketing issues may get in the way of coming on Podhammer so this may not happen soon or at all. Despite this I decided to shoot Rick Priestly an email asking about this controversial topic.

The email I sent is as follows:

Hi my name is Jeff Carroll I spoke to you a few months ago about my Warhammer podcast. I am writing to you in regards to some rules issues with the VC book. I hope you do not take offence to this email and if so I humbly apologise.

Since the new book has been released their has been huge debate about wether the Invocation of Nehek can be cast into combat. There are some other grey areas (as there will always be with such a complex game) but this issue has caused some serious contention within gaming circles around the world. Check out the many forums and you see debates everywhere.

This rule in particular has a massive impact on the way the Vampires are played and it would be great if we could get some ruling from somebody in the GW staff about this issue.

This is one of the FAQs I’m compiling. The last paragraph of the text strongly implies that you can cast it into combat, but does not actually state it. The FAQ clarifies that the spell can be cast into combat.

I was absolutely blown away that these guys took the time to help me out. I would like to thank Rick, Jervis and Alessio for their prompt response to my query. The FAQ has not been released yet but I am told it will be out very soon, and it is possible that they can change their minds at any time. However this goes along way to supporting the position that IoN can be cast into combat.

As part of the celebration of 25 Years of Warhammer fantasy, Games Workshop has released rules to play games of 5000pts or more.

Highlights include rules for Monstrous Hordes (6 Stegadons for a single rare choice? – OOOH YEAH!)

Rules can be downloaded from the Games Workshop site

(It appears Games Workshop have removed the rules pack from their site. I guess you will have to buy the April White Dwarf!)

It seems that every one has got the book now except me and I have to wait because I don’t want to spend $250 bucks on the spearhead set. I think it will be out in a week or so but I am busting to get it and start building a list.

Whats gives? Do the USA and UK get the army books before us in the colonies?. Or has everyone bought the spearhead?

When the next book comes out I think someone should volunteer to send it to me so I can do a podcast about it because as it is your all going to have to wait for a couple of weeks before the big Vampire show comes out!

As I mentioned in episode 13. I want to do a show dedicated to discussing the differences in the way tournaments are played in other parts of the world. The show will cover the various elements of tournaments such as composition, sports and scenarios.

Not quite Warhammer related but I thought this was preety cool. I had the oppurtunity to chat with Australian afternoon radio hosts and TV celebrities Hamish and Andy as part of some promotional work for my day job. International listeners won’t know who these guys are. But if you live in Australia you have probably seen them or heard them at some point.

I chatted for about 10mins with the guys over drinks they were very funny and more than happy to get to know some their fans.

For a change last week I decided to drag out my old beastmen army for a game. I totally redesigned my army with a focus on many small herds backed up by chariots and alot of magic (Lvl 4, 2x Lvl 2s; i.e. 10 power dice). The game reminded me why I dont like using too much magic in any kind of army.

First off the spells you get are completely random, so if you are planning some particular tactic based on getting a certain spell, you better have a back up plan. Even if you don’t want a specific spell, you often end up with something completely useless. This wasn’t a major problem in 6th ed. because you could give the power dice over to one of your other casters. However these days you can end up with a few dice left over and nothing worth casting.

The second issue I have with magic is one bad miscast at the wrong time can completely neutralise any plan you put in place. Yes this is true with every aspect of the game but no more so than in the magic phase. A miscast has the added flow on effect of that the scroll your opponent was going to use this turn to stop that game winning spell can be used in the next turn neutralizing yet another magic phase.

These elements make magic in my opinion just too risky relative the reward. Not to mention the points investment needed to provide an effective magic phase.

What do you think about magic, is the risk worth it? do you enjoy the randomness of this part of the game?
