Nice review of the high elves, though it seemed a little short to me, but then again I would as I play high elves. Good motivation to finish painting up my force.
Appreciate the show each time. Good review of the HE and a look at general tactics and character builds which are effective. I will say that I will go back and listen and jot down the builds so that I can try them out. I hope to go to a tourney sometime soon as it would be my first.
In this podcast there was mention there is a trend to take fewer characters and thus have more points to play with. Your guest spoke that he favors taking a lvl 4 and a BSB in his HE army and is finding great success with just those two characters. Does he mount the mage or leave him on foot? Either way, what unit does he like to put his high point, lvl 4 mage general to provide protection while still maximizing his casting ability? BTW, I think the White Lions are now the unit to take just eaking out the PG.
Great episode guys, I don’t know if I’m getting more into them or their getting better, but I’ve definately found the last few episodes to be really enjoyable.
I found your thoughts on HE’s very interesting, particularly the way in which (guest) Jeff described the army playing as a whole;
I believe he said something to the effect that “HE’s are a somewhat defensive, reactionary force, using movement, magic and shooting to engineer combats in their favour, and carefully choosing the moment to strike to go for the big win”
At least that’s the impression that I was left with. I found it interesting because my impression had been that HE’s had to be more aggressive than that; because as was mentioned in the show, thier magic is perhaps too expensive to try to go magic heavy, and whilst their shooting can be decent, they are always going to be at a disadvantage against more dedicated ranged armies such as the Dwarf’s, Empire, and WE’s can produce (correct me if I’m wrong) and so a list has to be capable of aggressively attacking such opponents. I found it interesting to read the reports from the guy who won the UKGT who played a pretty aggressive HE army, and which seemed to take less advantage of SoA (or ASF). It’s good to see two different HE players who seem to have quite different base interpretations of how thier army works both win a tournament with the same army book- a tribute perhaps to the versitility of the new He book!
I did wonder though, how Jeff deals with an opponent who can outdo him at his own game; A typical dwarf army for instance is surely ideally suited to overpowering HE’s in the shooting phase, nullifying HE’s in magic, and having decent infantry ready to respond to any combat threats? In this instance, I assume you have to switch to a more aggressive style of play, in which case, does it not make sense to make a list with this in mind to begin with and build a very aggressive list? Or do you think that this kind of list can be outdone by other races aggressive lists, and that the more reactionary one is the best balance; with gunlines simply being a more difficult kind off opponent against whom you just try to do as well as you can, rather than hoping for a big win? Its good to hear the opinions of experianced, and skilled players (rather than purely theoryhammerists, which seem to makeup most forums) on such things- thats one of the things that makes podhammer so good (the other thing being your cheeky auzzie accents
)
Anyway, perhaps I have waffled at you enough, congrats on the tournament win, I look forwards to hearing you guys talk about O&G’s next time…
Hi Jason,
Thanks you for your feedback on the latest podcast.
I leave the level 4 mage on foot and don’t cement him with one unit.
At the 3k tourney he found himself under different threats therefore had to jump around to keep safe. He usually began in the spear unit behind the two elite infantry units. He often ran into a forest and cast spells from there, all bar one High elf spell does not require line of sight. Other times he joined the RBT’s crew. And when the situation was safe he often ran behind the safest unit (White Lions) on his own.
In smaller games (2250) I give him the Folrathi robe. Then he can have a more active part in the front line, obviously avoiding magical weapons.
I found that one level 4 and the Banner of Sorcery gave for an effective magic phase without going over the top.
Thanks again.
Hi Robert,
Very good point about the dwarfs!! In the last 2 tourneys, Dogcon and Vigilance I have lost one game and guess what, to a dwarf general…:).
I did rush forward too early in that game and found myself in a world of hurt.
My firepower was matching his as the RBT’s and archers have better range then there organ guns.
With an army like this, I find that I can stack a flank and use terrain to avoid his shooting, while I advance. This was working until I made a silly mistake.
This tactic also worked really well agaist the Tomb Kings on the weekend. Another army with good shooting and magic.
The ellyrion banner and White lions are a must have in my book for this tactic to work effectively.
Your comments about the UK GT winner are true and that’s a feature of the new book that I love the most. We can field very different yet very effective armies. My next army will be with the Star dragon and cavalry units, to try a “Blitzkrieg” approach, will see how it goes.
Cheers.
Double eagles, yes!
I am partial to two at 2k even, but am glad to see a reputable player going for multiples of such a solid, cost effective choice.
at the end of your show someone asked how to find local gamers , i found the website http://www.spielerz.com works well. i live in Iowa (USA) and have still found 7 people in my area because of the matching system.
I can not tell you huch much I enjoy listening to the podcast. How comw there are no podhammer tee shirts at the mwunion site? well either way I love all the info provided in each episode.
In the podcast it talks about a castle and gate strategy. I was wondering what that is? love the show. thanks a ton
Jeff acutally says “the Castle ‘negates’ about best stat.”
The castle strategy is deploying in a very tight formation in one corner and using shooting/magic to force your opponent to come to you.
